Weekly Acorn - Meeting of August 21, 2006
Reporter - Duane Day 7:00pm Meeting called to order by President Roberta. Mike Curtin led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Invocation was given by Howard Papworth. We sang America the Beautiful and did a good job. We were served dinner of Mexican Stuffed Chicken Breast, Tossed Salad, Pasta and Cookies for dessert. We had no visiting Rotarians, must have been too hot! Guest of Rotarians were: Jeff Thomas, Eileen Thomas, Bill Scrimsher, Carrie Lane, Susan Lockington, Genevieve Shiroma, our speaker from SMUD and her husband Michael Abbott. * Crab Feed on February 10th. Wes wants everyone to donate a bottle of good wine for the wine rack Bob is constructing. * We will have Club Pictures on August 28th. Be there or you will be left out. * District Governor will attend our Sept. 18th meeting. A Board Meeting will precede the meeting. * Contact Roberta if you are interested in attending the District Polio Eradication trip to Ghana. * Remember the Foundation Seminar on August 12th. Buzz McClain won the Free Dinner drawing. Eileen Thomas drew a good high card for the Ace of Spaces, but Ace of Clubs was not a winner. Roberta taught us a new beer drinking song that she learned in school as a sixth grader. She must have been in quite a progressive school. I don’t think I learned that song until I joined my college fraternity in 1951. Peter Wick had no dirt on anyone, so he fined us all just for being here. Besides Little Genius claimed it was too hot anyway. Bud paid a Happy Fine as he found out he is healthier than he thought. Dan Smallhouse introduced our speaker from SMUD; Genevieve Shiroma, who is a SMUD Board Member. She gave us all a most informative presentation. She was happy that none of us had power failures over the past 10 days of extreme heat, as SMUD has taken measures to prevent this problem. SMUD has a new natural gas powered power plant at Rancho Seco up and running and so far we need only ½ of its power and is selling the balance outside of our area. She talked about the SMUD Yolo County Annexation as being a good deal for all concerned in Yolo and Sacramento County. Yolo County people came to SMUD requesting that SMUD supply power instead of PG & E. SMUD is convinced it will be a good deal for Yolo County citizens and Sacramento County citizens as well. The annexation will be on the November ballot so study it carefully and VOTE ON IT. SMUD assures us it will e good for all concerned as they have a good track record and have just been named the number one run utility in California for customer satisfaction by J.D. Powers. Roberta led us in “Day is Done” and meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm. |
