Rotary Club Sponsored Moot Court Team Wins Championship
April 26, 2006 – San Juan Unified School District’s Bella Vista High School has another honor to add to their list of achievements. On April 1, 2006, the Bella Vista Moot Court traveled to Washington D.C. to participate in the prestigious National High School Moot Court Team competition sponsored by Washington College of Law. For the third time in four years, Bella Vista placed first. “This is quite an honor, and I am so proud of our students. They worked extremely hard, and their hard work paid off,” said Marlyn Pino-Jones, principal of Bella Vista High School. The program draws from teams throughout the nation. Students were presented with Supreme Court case Michael Smith v. Calvert City School District which involved a mandatory random drug testing of a high school athlete suspected of marijuana use and violations of fourth amendment protections. Bella Vista students worked twelve hours a week for two months preparing cases as appellants or appellees in this high-level competition. The Bella Vista team members included: Jason Holley, Olivia Nguyen, Lucas Habte, Roopika Subramanian, and Lydia Tomkiw. The team was coached by attorneys Tim Schooley and Robert Holley. Teacher coaches were Jena McDonald and Mike Erickson. In the individual competition, Olivia Nguyen received first place. Making the competition possible were major financial contributors from the community including the Rotary Clubs of Fair Oaks and Orangevale, as well as many individual contributions from families and the Bella Vista faculty. Bella Vista High School is located at 8301 Madison Avenue in Fair Oaks. |
