Where's ray of hope? By M Saleem Chaudhry While most of what Bret Stephen has written in his article,"Pakistan's next President is category 5 disaster" WSJ,September 2, 2008, is true; some clarifications are called for first ,before commenting on predictions of Stephen, based on his premonitions. As long as Zardari, being a tool of propoganda, by AlQaeeda for galvanizing public support for them and his(Zardari's) priorities for self-interest and other ulterior objectives, instead of war on terror, are concerned, Musharaf was no poorer stuff on both accounts. This should be more than clear to American leadership if it can carry out analytical evaluation of the developments of last seven years, particularly last two years which resulted in the current level of fiasco in Northren areas and Afghanistan.Secondly if American Administration had genuinely supported the movement for social change for rule of law spear-headed by legal fraternity, backed by civic bodies and media, without supporting and facilitating Musharaf in unlawful enforcement of emergency and coining the most ridiculous and unlawful tool of NRO, individual, dubbed as category 5 ,disaster, would have never dreamt of being where he is today. However there's still a ray of hope,as the Machiavellian games of Zardari continue ,particularly in case of restoration of Pre Nov.3,2007 judiciary, the legal fraternity has not washed its hands off the movement for social change. If the current and future American Administation could work out more objective evaluation of prevailing realities than supercial view and short term gains, then supporting the movement for social change ,seriously for restoration of preNov3,2007 judiciary ,can lead to transformation of situation entirely for the lasting benefit of all concerned, Pakistanis ,Americans and humanity at large
