8/24/05 We left San Diego in late afternoon, on to Barstow, CA, home of Cask & Cleaver, Booze n' Beer and powerline towers shaped like wire women's dress mannequins (which I notice are still around, the further east we travel), and of course all the eerie desert deeds that go down in Kill Bill, Vol.2. My second introduction to Barstow, in other words. I took a distinct liking to the place, for no better reasons than it wasn't as hot as I anticipated and it's in the middle of moon-scape type geography. We finished the day, rather late, in Williams, Arizona. We missed much of the pine ridges on the drive up because of nightfall, but the air was still warm and pungent when we got out of the car. We traveled around 450 miles, and they were entirely pleasant, if not a little bleary as the neon from semi headlights, road markers and pit stop signs succeeded in making me feel like a 50 year old in need of bi-focals. |
