Sacramento, CA - September 18, 2006 - Wireless Sacramento Regional Project Coalition announced the approval of the Wireless Sacramento Regional Project (WiSac) Project Charter that will be the document responsible for guiding the development of an interoperable, ubiquitous, metropolitan and rural broadband wireless network for the Sacramento Region. The WiSac planned service coverage area includes nine counties - Butte, Sacramento, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Solano, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba. Over 30 municipalities are included with a combined population of approximately 3 million people and a potential service area of 12,000 square miles. This would make the network one of the largest and most technologically advanced municipal networks in the country.

“The SCV Network, a non-profit science and technology association, will be responsible for the overall management of the project with support from the Wireless Sacramento Regional Project Coalition, a forum of representatives from Sacramento regional city and county governments, education, transportation and non-profits” stated John Ramos, President of the SCV Network. “Our vision is to deploy a California intra-state municipal wireless broadband network between Sacramento, Silicon and Central Valleys. This network would provide a municipal wireless bridge between the regions and potentially other parts of California as well.”

The municipal wireless broadband network will provide VoIP, data and video streaming services utilizing current best-of-breed technologies available to include IPv6, and wireless technologies with a 24x7 availability criteria. For those with authorized access, the network will be available for free or at a low cost.

WiSac will assist organizations called upon for emergency relief, public safety and national security during man-made and natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes. This will help serve the needs of emergency services including law enforcement, fire departments, ambulance companies, the American Red Cross, FEMA and the National Guard. These organizations require mission critical wireless telecommunication systems in order to coordinate emergency services, and could be benefited by a more robust network providing rich multi-media content delivered securely and wirelessly over the Internet.
