Here is a summary below.

The grant will enable Rotary clubs to place limited Rotary billboards, banners, the RI prepared TV and Radio Public Service Announcements in their local TV and radio stations, or newspaper supplements that feature local Rotary stories. For the 2005-06 Rotary year, monies have been allocated, ranging from US$1,000 – US$5,000 to support projects during the current Rotary year. Assistance will be available until the funds are depleted. The Public Image Task Force area and zone coordinators will be charged with the responsibilities to promote Rotary’s Public Image campaign to clubs and districts, and encourage them to use the grants in their outreach efforts to the general public. 1. PR grant qualifications: All clubs are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to applications: • That will regionalize and place Rotary billboards, banners, TV and radio PSAs provided by Rotary International/the 2005-06 Public Image Resource group. The target should be the general public, with the purpose of promoting Rotary and membership development. • Where districts or clubs contribute a portion of the required funding – particularly for an integrated (more than one medium) PR plan. 2. Tools and Materials to assist clubs/districts for placement • A set of materials, developed by the 2005-06 Public Image Resource Group provide helpful steps to ensure effective public relations materials. “Five Easy Steps” to promoting the principles and programs of Rotary can be found at: here • In January 2005, Rotary clubs around the world received Public Service Announcements on a CD-Rom for use in print, broadcast and billboard media. The materials provide an efficient and professional way to share Rotary with your community. Information and PSA examples can be found at: here • In February 2006, new PSA materials focusing on Rotary’s educational programs will be available to Rotary clubs. 3. Application procedures • The district or club PR chair works with the governor or club president to evaluate media outreach opportunities within the area and develop a PR plan. • Applicants must complete and sign the attached PR grant application – including plans on how to promote Rotary through print, television, radio, outdoor (billboards), internet or special/media events oriented to the general public. • The plan must include budget and vendor estimates. • Applicants must also review and sign the “Terms and Conditions for Rotary International Public Relations Grants.” • The club or district PR chair should complete and forward the PR Grant application and Terms and Conditions document to the Public Relations Division at Rotary International. As a District PR Officer, I suspect that people at RI (obviously in the USA) do not have any idea how little relevance their material and even approaches has in other countries. In the UK, where we share a common language and all that, the prepared TV advert just grates with many people, and no-one I have spoken to thinks that it would do anything to induce a non-Rotarian to even approach us. Similarly, billboards are not viewed well, and we don't believe that posting the provided material on one would work. We are looking at issuing a free newspaper around one of our major cities (Manchester) to commuters, and are currently preparing a distribution plan and content for this. We also try local radio, and recently got quite a lot of response to an appeal for clothes for Pakistan, but get distinctly less interest in matters of membership. The reason for raising this is that RI are often very prescriptive in what is allowed when applying for grants and awards, and these are written from a mindset and cultural perspective that often is inappropriate in other countries. Anyone agree?
