Lebanon proving a wasp’s net for Israel

Just in line with the warning of Trundy Rubin,” Don’t play into Hezbollah’s hands” Sacramento Bee July 26,2006 ,the same day ,Wednesday ‘s happenings in Lebanon proved as aptly described by an Israeli Army Maj. Quoted in Washington Post, it’s entering a wasp’s net for infantrymen. •   Rubin analyzed and listed objectively realities very explicitly •   The world of 2006 with Israel’s closest ally USA bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan is not like that of 1982 •    PLO of 1982 was a foreign entity driven out with American help because Arab states refused to aid the Palestinians. •   Hezbollah is not the PLO; unlike1982.Hezbollah is not a foreign group which can be driven out of Lebanon. They are Lebanese citizens who run charitable services in Southern Lebanon where they have substantial support. •   Lebanon’s democratically elected but weak government failed to rein Hezbollah’s militia because it feared a new civil war. •   Hezbollah unlike PLO of 1982, does have its foreign backers, Syria and Iran with whom US officials have little influence. The Sunni Arab countries with puppet governments like, Egypt, Saudi Arab and Jordan, criticizing Hezbollah have little influence over it. The best hope of isolating Hezbollah is to strengthen, not to weaken or destroy Lebanese government. Massive numbers of refugees and the bombing of civilian convoys fleeing the fighting are turning Lebanese against Israel rather than Hezbollah. This makes us understand the validity of Israeli Maj.’s apt expression that invading Lebanon is entering wasps’ net for infantrymen as proved by Wednesday’s happenings.

peace has become such an elusive ideal for governments and politicians to really commit to - I wonder why war seems like such a reliable answer when the outcome of war is only reliable in that many lives are exposed to greater violence and suffering than without. how can we really teach peace across nations and the world so that war becomes much harder to find political support? it seems that is the only way to steer society clear from using war as a negotiation or to impose will on others.
