A Tool for Free Computer Literacy Training
In my first “Scribe” I talked about Computer Literacy for Seniors and how Rotary clubs could provide basic computer literacy training access for seniors (or any group for that matter) at little cost. I would now like to share with you a ready made “E-School” that you can use to provide important introductory training to those you may choose to help. The service is absolutely free and can be accessed with the provision of minimal personal information by anyone. I introduce GCFLEarnfree www.gcflearnfree.org an initiative of the Goodwill Community Foundation of Eastern North Carolina in the USA. GCF Global Learning® is offering free computer training classes for people using online classes where they can learn basic computer skills to more advanced workplace training. Classes are offered in English and Spanish. Courses include basic Internet, email and internet safety, introduction to Microsoft Office 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003, the freeware Open Office (Writer and Calc) and basic life skills training in basic mathematics, money management, career development and workplace development. Once you sign up (a free process that is not at all invasive of your privacy) you can do all the tutorials at your own pace, in your own time. If you prefer (or need) some instruction then some Instructor led classes are available at no cost. These courses last 3 weeks and involve interaction with an instructor by bulletin board/ email and electronic submission of assignments. GCF Global Learning® has been reviewed and approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). On completion of an instructor led course students may download and accreditation certificate. The site has just reached the milestone of having 100,000 student registered! I am one of the instructors and find my time well spent interacting with people of many nations around the world. Your club or organization can become an Organizational Member (OM) of the website (also free). Organizational Members (OMs), previously known as Partners, are organizations that share the GCF belief in the importance of computer literacy and that want to provide opportunities for individuals to learn fundamental computer skills at no cost. Please have a look at the website and read about the program. It is a genuine attempt to make computer literacy available to anyone regardless of station in life. The site can be used from any internet connected computer with the requisite software installed. If Microsoft Office is not available then Open Office (freeware) classes are available. There are no strings, no requirements and an excellent privacy statement. Think about what a Rotary Club could do for a community by providing a small computer and internet access point that makes the GCF program available. There are also a large number of other websites that provide free IT tutorials on many subjects (albeit with no instructors). |
