Where possible, we seek negotiated resolutions, but have the experience and ability to aggressively champion our client's case before courts and other tribunals. Meeting Recap October 13, 2008 by Maynard Nelson Last Week... After opening the meeting with an invocation and flag salute, Pres. Tim called on Dennis Trujillo for the Rotary Minute. He described the work of the RI Peace and Conflict Resolution Program which was new for many of us. Returning member Alan Oshima was introduced to the club again and featured Rotarian Past President Walter Dahl, Bankruptcy Law, informed our Speaker, Congressman Dan Lungren that he was not really in favor of Congress rescuing folks from bankruptcy. Dianne Woodruff introduced her two mentees from Rotary's YIP program along with a refresher on what the program does. Her two mentees are sisters and will be the first from their family to attend a higher education facility. At the start of the Wealth Redistribution section, Pres. Tim emotionally thanked the club for their very generous response to the $12,000 shortfall from the golf tournament fundraiser for the physically and health impaired children in our community. With a generous challenge from Bruce Meissner, and donations from many other members, the shortfall was covered. Then Past President Wes Yee paid to tell a joke and announce his Tahoe property for rent. Past member and now Honorary Member Assemblyman Roger Neillo introduced Honorary Member Congressman Dan Lungren who gave us a very informative talk about congressional issues. The original Bailout bill which went down to defeat, gave unlimited authority to Secretary Paulson with no oversight and other omissions. The next bill was called a Rescue bill which appropriated only $350 billion, with strong oversight from a committee composed equally of democrats and republicans and a limit on executive compensation for those firms being helped. It also included an insurance provision rather than just supplying money. Congressman Lungren also pointed out that some, so called "earmarks" are necessary and gave several examples including extension of tax credits that would otherwise expire. Then he pointed out that the House prohibits adding amendments to a bill which are not germaine to the subject but the Senate has no such rule. He was given a strong ovation for an informative and educational talk.
