GREEN PROTOCOL WG SOURCE: Martin Potts, Martel Consulting, IPv6 Forum Potential US Funding for Smart Energy Grids " .... Smart energy grids would allow real-time monitoring of a customer's energy use through Internet technology. Proponents of a national smart grid say it would likely result in decreased electricity use, allow energy companies to more efficiently distribute electricity, and encourage homeowners to install alternative energy generators such as solar panels and sell their excess energy back to the grid. ...." The EU is currently asking for project proposals in the same area. GREEN PROTOCOL WG SOURCE: Martin Potts, Martel Consulting, IPv6 Forum. The description of the committee is as follows: Green Protocol Initiative - EU This committee will establish a working relationship with the EU R&D Funding Program, inform the WG about the timing and scope of calls for proposals from the European Commission for projects addressing “Green ICT” topics pertaining to saving energy in buildings. It will inform about the scope of – and partners involved in- existing EC projects in the area of “Green ICT”, and will inform about related activities in Europe outside of the EC funding program. Chair – Martin Potts, Martel Consulting, IPv6 Forum Co-Chair – Sebastien Ziegler MONTHLY DISCOVERY MEETING – Geof will be the temporary chair of that committee which will be up for review to potentially be merged into one of the other committees. MONTHLY VIRTUAL MEETING - Geof said the description of that committee is is presently in process. DEMO BUILDING PROJECTS – Geof will work with Kevin Powell to develop the formation of the description for this committee. REMOTE SENSORS - Patrick Grossetette and Arta Doci have worked to get the description of this committee completed, it is as follows: Remote Sensors The Remote Sensors SIG comprises a group of researchers, scientists and wireless engineers. They provide a forum of all the aspects of Remote Sensing, including standards, implementation and viable applications to help on education and deployment of the technology. Chair - Patrick Grossetete, Arch Rock, IPv6 Forum Co-Chair – Arta Doci, Colorado School of Mines VIDEO SURVEILLANCE & SECURITY – Headed by Junaid Islam, Geof will touch base with Junaid to see what progress has been made with that committee, or to see if that committee should potentially merge with another one. EXTERNAL STRATEGIC PARTNERS AND COLLABORATION – Phil March, chair, reported that he thinks that one might be best suited merge with another committee. ASSET TRACKING AND SUPPLY CHAIN OPTIMIZATION – Geof will contact Dave Green, chair to see if the meeting in D.C. had taken place and if there is any news to report as a result, and will see where they are at regarding the committee description. DATA CENTER OPTIMIZATION – Geof to communicate with Pete to update on status. ENERGY EFFICIENT ETHERNET – Tri Phan, chair. Geof to follow up with Tri. GUCI – GLOBAL UNIFIED COMMUNCATION ID – Mike Hull, acting chair. Geof has gotten together with a few contributors to this group and is doing further research and exploration. Geof to get together with chairs of the various committees to discuss potential committee consolidation. • Open Items & Discussion Mike Biber pulling together a SIG in relation to Green Protocol work in a number of different areas in Australia, in particular the Victorian government has launched a project pulling together a number of industry initiatives, one of the most advanced one seems to be auto and emergency services industries. There is a working group in Australia from by NTT Australia, that is interested in promoting v6, and leveraging the work they have done in Japan, USA and other locations, expression of interest from various folks at NTT in Green Protocol WG related activities. Geof reported the Green Protocol WG Library, is working well and is available for all the members of the Green Protocol WG, the address for the Library is www.GreenProtocolWG.org Martin Potts reported that Green ICT is becoming a very hot topic by the EU commission, it is coming up in a number of proposal for fiber networks, sensor networks, people want to control the environment, etc. It is definitely a good area where there will be a lot of areas of opportunity for future work and projects. Martin mentioned about the Sensor Lab at the College of London that Socrates Varakliotis is involved with in London that they are working to getting involved with some funding. While the funding is focused for European based organizations they are all open for involvement by any organization world-wide to participate in. China gets funding from places like Australia and the United States. There are some opportunities opening up in November that will pertain to Green ICT. Geof asked if anybody is planning to attend the China IPv6 Summit which will be held in April. Tony Hill from Australian IPv6 Forum might be attending. We will probably getting more information on that summit on the February Virtual Meeting call directly from China. Socrates reported he has been working on the EU-2010 project, and in that capacity they have developed a large sensor network at the College of London, to serve as a test bed. They are looking at buildings and monitoring buildings and how they can use the network in the interest of conserving power and resources going into buildings. More details to be reported in the future as the technology progresses. Geof mentioned there should be a MetroNet6 meeting taking place later in the month. Mike asked if Socrates or Martin are involved with the demonstration in Barcelona. Martin has received an invitation, but hasn’t decided whether or not he will be going, it appears to be an interesting program and demonstration. Martin is going to consider if he’ll go and will report back if he attends. Mike reported on a clustering project for vehicles, and IEEE protocol which has mandate an IPv6 stack, and there is a demonstration project taking place in Adelaide that Mike will be attending that will focus on vehicles being able to communicate with one another directly to be safer and more energy efficient. Martin talked about Renault project involving and IPv6 car. Mike mentioned that the protocol is IEEE 1609, on the services stack of the protocol calls for IPv6. Ken Tough discussed his involvement with General Motors OnStar program, Toyota is involved with the licensing of it as well, and is wondering if there has been any involvement with General Motors to date? It didn’t appear that there where any contacts in process at the moment. Ken would provide Geof with additional information that he could forward to the group and put in the Green Protocol WG Library. • Next Discovery Meetings Geof reiterated the upcoming events presently on the horizon that will potentially be incorporating Green Protocol WG activities and members: • March 19 & 20 - Google IPv6 Conference, Mountain View • April 15 & 16 – China IPv6 Summit, Beijing • April 21 & 22 – Rocky Mountain IPv6 Summit, Denver • May 14 & 15 – GovTech 2009, Sacramento If anybody is aware of any other relevant events in coming months, please pass that information on to Geof. Next Virtual Meeting Next Virtual Meeting – February 17th, 5:00 p.m. PST (California time) for Asia This mailing is going to the members of the Green Protocol Working Group (both Butterfly and Bee members).
