Meeting Recap: Nov. 18th, 2008 by Staff, RCS

Last Meeting...

Another weekly meeting today. Think for a moment what it takes to put it together. Months in advance, the Program Committee selects a speaker and Chair of the Day. Staff schedules the location, prepares an agenda and, with help from volunteers, set up name tags, signs, cashier stuff, electronic equipment etc. Thanks everyone.

Past Pres. George Basye played some beautiful piano music before Pres. Tim opened the meeting with the Invocation and Flag Salute and thanked both George for the music and Dave and Kim Pratt of DK Cellars, who furnished the pre-meeting wine.

Hardie Setzer, Diane Schacterle and Brian Kidney were listed in sick bay, requesting cards only, please. April Butcher was called up to give the Rotary Minute choosing to report on club efforts for Loaves and Fishes. We man the 5th Tuesday of any month with some 33 volunteers, the next one being Dec 30th.

Sgt at Arms Dave Higdon gave a relatively smooth intro of guests, visiting Rotarians and prospective members as did our President of the people at the Head Table.

Grant Deary announced the next Happy Hour will be held at the Air Traffic Control center TRACON. There are conditions to meet for joining the tour so contact the Rotary office. Bruce Hester reported that Daughter's Day is on December 22nd with Dancing With The Stars type entertainment. Past Pres. John Frisch told of the annual Toy Drive Dec 1-12 and reminded us how much it can mean to a child to wake up Christmas morning with at least one present. Amy Dean followed with the Dec 4th date to man the phones at KVIE Pledge Drive. Be sure to participate.

The speaker, Rabbi Wechsler-Azen, was introduced by Mike Polis. Wechsler-Azen spoke about the Fresh Producers Project, an non-profit organization to have youngsters grow and sell fresh produce within low-income neighborhoods. He explained that fresh produce is important to good health, is a better choice than high-carb/fast foods, and better health results in a more active life. The organization works with wholesale produce businesses, chefs, farms and seemingly any number of related industries. A percentage of the proceeds go into the Fresh Producer Trust, which provides scholarship funds for further education and career training. Participants in the project graduating from high school will be eligible to apply. Youth in the program learn about private enterprise and business methods and their better health contributes to better learning, hence fewer dropouts from school. The effort has so many facets that it was difficult to comprehend all of them but it seems to treat several problems facing low-income people. MDN Rotaract Club of Sacramento by Staff, RCS
