Volume 16 No 36 Waterfront Rotary Club Breakfast Meetings held at The Hotel School, Granger Bay every Friday at 7H00 for 7H15 President:: James Liddell Secretary: Hannarie Wenhold Scribe: Riaan Volschenk PO Box 50007, Waterfront

Cape Town, 8002, South Africa Past RI President Bob Barth who passed away last week, said at the 1993 RI convention in Melbourne, Australia;

I believe when I wear the Rotary wheel emblem it symbolises that; “You can rely on me. I am dependable. I am available. I give more than I take. I add value. I serve ”

Captain’s Log: Evening Meeting with Inner Wheel

A great evening of Fellowship with diverse activities and tons of food!

Last Night of The Proms

A few Rotarians and I attended the Proms. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening. It is an annual event where they raise about R500 000. The success of the project is due to a partnership between the Wynberg Rotary club, sponsors, individuals, organizations, Inner Wheel Wynberg, Rotaract Wynberg and Interact clubs. The money is spent on the following:

Youth

Upgrading three primary schools in Grassy Park

Lavender Hill Secondary School: developing a multi-purpose sports field; introducing after-school and adult education activities and development of a vegetable garden

Sailing programme: based at Zeekoevlei which benefits the Grassy Park Youth. Some of the graduates have had the opportunity to compete in an international event and one of the sailors is a member of the Americas Cup Team.

Health projects

Retreat Community Health Centre: partnership project between Provincial Government, Wynberg Rotary, and Nittedal Rotary (Norway) where they helped to fund a waiting room and a pharmacy at the centre

Wheelchairs: they have supplied with Rotary District various elderly with wheelchairs

Developing people

Empower people and thus making them independent – like buying a seamstress a hand sewing machine

Rotary really makes a difference worldwide. The more partnerships we form, the more we will be able to do. People trust us more than governments and with government partnerships we can do more than on our own. We must not only want the light shine on us – let’s get the job done, make a difference and forget about personal glory. Very interesting info!! Now if we could just get the other 30,999 clubs to post up THEIR newsletters on a regular basis, imagine what a beautiful and useful thing that would be!??
