Meeting Recap October 20 2008 Last Meeting...Brown Bag Day It was very informative and enjoyable to see the project that Scot Sorensen has overseen for the past several years at St. John's Lutheran Church. The stained glass is exquisite, and the church is beautiful. Pastor Scot has truly made St. John's a community gathering place. - Susan Sheridan The Sacramento Cemetary tour was very enlightening, peaceful and interesting. Did I say it was peaceful? We learned a lot about Sacramento's past leaders and city history. The private tour from Mead Kibbey and Dick Ryder was packed, people were dying to get in. - John Swentowsky Lev Kaganovich provided us with a quick year by year snapshot of all the projects that Turner Construction has done since their inception in 1902. One of their most recent projects, Sutter Hospital includes state of the art technology in design/building. They actually take photos of the areas to be renovated (pipes in the ceiling, basements, etc.) and it is downloaded into 3D software that allows the design team to build the exact dimensions of the new equipment to be installed around the existing equipment. This allows work to be pre-fabricated and installed much quicker. This is especially critical in areas that can not afford to be "out of service" for measurements and installations (i.e., operating / surgical rooms). I was disappointed because we didn't get to wear hard hats or play in the dirt, but the demonstration was very impressive. Thanks Lev - Monica Sandgathe Great view, great food, great conversation. The Brown Bag at the Bluff's in Fair Oaks hosted by Jim Streng, was very entertaining and informative. - Geof Lambert allowed Sutter to share some of their current projects. Some of the studies had been presented at larger meetings, published in journals or are part of larger research projects. The 20 minute segments ranged from Age Race Ethnicity in Breast Cancer subtypes in California, an interesting "Robot" approach to total hip replacement and something as simple as Annual Health Reminders. Katherine Keeny was a great host making sure all fellow Rotarians were well taken care of! - Jim Culleton Tony "theTiger" Lopez was on the top of his game sharing stories of his 3 World Championships, his promotion business and experiences growing up in the fight game. Still in top shape, Tony encouraged us all to be honest and straight with folks about our business dealings and families. An enjoyable lunch, being able to see how a 'champion' views life and business. - John B. Kelly We were treated to a great presentation from Heidi Hershenhouse and her team at Smile Business Products followed by words of wisdom from three time world boxing champion Tony "The Tiger" Lopez. Special thanks to the Rotary office and Ettore for the great lunch! - Christopher Wohl Brown bag at the Towe Auto Museum was a nostalgic look at motor vehicles we grew up with and enjoyed driving with the widows down (wishing we kept a few) and wondering about what tomorrow will bring. - Kendall Tough |
