When three US Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Vero Beach Sunrise visited Chipa Tabane Secondary School in May last year, little did the students realise how they would benefit.

American Rtns John Rogers, Frank Sosta and Bob Von Buelow, with Waterkloof's Arina Palm, toured through two informal settlements in Refilwe and Cullinan with a view to establishing a joint project.

They were investigating the possibility of creating a daycare centre for Aids orphans.

But students quietly suggested they could do with school uniforms, and their message touched the hearts of the American visitors. In no time a donation of R15,000 arrived and after negotiations with Pep Stores and Mary's Fashions it was agreed to supply school uniforms to no less than 57 students.

The students, in turn, pledged to support social responsibility projects within their community - to be coordinated by Rtn Arina starting January 2006.

Distribution of the uniforms began with a visit by School Principal Mr Masina and two students to Waterkloof Rotary, which meets at St Alban's School Cricket Pavillion, Wednesday evenings.

A week after this the remaining uniforms were handed to students at the school during a ceremony with invited guests and media representatives present.

School principal Mr Masina is now keen to involve his students in Rotary matters and there is talk of an Interact Club being formed.
