Many children in the Philippines live in unimaginable poverty. This photo was taken by Lacombe Rotary President Lorie Kamps, when she and her husband Bill were in the Philippines on another Rotary project.
On your mark, get set, go!

The Lacombe Rotary Club is set to raise $25,000 for children in need overseas as well as here in Lacombe.

“It’s a new project,” said Lacombe Rotarian Ivor Bernatsky.

The club hopes to raise $10,000 from ticket sales to the international dinner, slated for Nov. 9 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre (LMC).

That amount would be split evenly between the Lacombe Caring for Children Fund and an international project the Rotary club is working on, with a Rotary club in the Philippines. The local Rotarians hope to receive matching funds for the international component ($5,000) from the Wild Rose Foundation, which could bring the total to $10,000. Then, the Rotarians will request that the Chicago-based Rotary Foundation match that amount, bringing the total to $20,000. That way, 150 per cent of every dollar spent on admission goes to charity.

Of that amount, $20,000 will go towards a project to help impoverished children in the Philippines and the remaining $5,000 will go to Lacombe Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) with the money earmarked to help needy children in Lacombe and area.

“This is a remarkable feat when you think that it started with 320 people paying $50 each for a great meal in the LMC,” said Bernatsky.
